Alert - Toner Pirate Warning
An alarming situation has come to our attention. Yesterday we received notice that many companies in the Bay Area are receiving fax advertisements stating "Toner Special - Buy 1 Get 1 Free".
We took it upon ourselves to investigate this offer and found that the pricing is almost double what one toner cartridge would cost and when we asked what the price for the toner would be after the special, the price given was 50% higher than what you'd pay with a legitimate supplier.
This is not a new story. I'm sorry to say "toner pirates" have been operating in this area for many years. Lately it appears the calls have increased. Consumers have been bilked out of billions of dollars by these unscrupulous offers. Toner pirates prey on businesses all over the country and misrepresent themselves as being from the "local warehouse" or "local supplier".
The FTC is cracking down on bogus office supply schemes through a multi-agency effort called "Operation Misprint". Ten cases were investigated recently by the FTC following issuance of court orders directed at ending these allegedly fraudulent operations. To find out more about these investigations, which companies are being investigated and how you can file a complaint, go to www.ftc.gov/opa/2000/10/businessservice.htm and www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/9912/misprint.htm.
In addition, the FTC has published a free Facts for Business brochure, "Avoiding Office Supply Scams", that provides tips for recognizing office supply scams and suggestions on how to avoid them at www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/supplies.htm. Arista also has a "Customer Protection Package" with more information about how to spot a scam and avoid being a victim. Call us at 800-888-1718 for a copy today!
